Problems and
solutions for non-English speaking migrants
by M.J.H.
There are many problems faced by both the State and the
family of migrants.
One such problem is the difference in verbal communication.
The first issue would be general communication. How would
the family be able to seek medical attention? Or describe what afflicts them?
Reporting crimes or other such emergencies would be an extreme example, though
just as valid as shopping or finding somewhere to live. Everyday tasks would be
impossible to complete. Not only would the family be unable to help themselves,
it also extends to other members of the public.
One particular solution would be to make a written and
verbal exam part of the citizenship test. This would make sure people intending
to live in a new country have at least the basic communication skills required
to live there.
Another problem faced by migrants would be isolation.
When you are unable to understand the language you don’t
feel part of the country. This can cause problems such as isolated community
pockets where integration with the new country is no longer required to
function. With isolation and seclusion people no longer feel obliged to integrate
with their new country’s culture and stick to their own within this new community.
This can cause discrimination and even racism to build between the community’s
people and the country’s people, both sides distrustful of each other.
Strategies to avoid racial discrimination and isolated
community pockets would be events promoting awareness for a particularly high
concentration of immigrants – so the rest of the community can understand their
practices and not be so ignorant. Community-built events promoting the idea
that together, people can accomplish so much more than they would, divided.
In conclusion, for two cultures to come together and avoid
the problems of racism, discrimination and isolated communities, Government policies
must be implemented to promote the idea of both groups coming together to work
as one.
When you inspire the sense of community in people all other
problems can be easily overcome.
