Kites
by M.R.
The day was really quite windy, but what an excellent day to
fly a kite!
Little Johnny decided that the kite with the long tail and
blue/yellow ribbons would bob up and down quite nicely in this bit of wind.
So he pulled out the green bag that the kite was stored in.
But unfortunately, when he pulled the kite out he found the tail had broken off
and the ribbons that were tied at various intervals were flattened and would
probably take him a while to buff them up.
Anyway, he thought, I’ll just put it in the air and
hopefully the wind will help get them to a nice full bow.
Just as he was tying the string on the underside of the kite
in readiness to put in the air his friend William came over.
Johnny was fiddling with the ties and patting down the kite,
looking up and down, checking to make sure there were no holes in the kite that
would hinder its flight.
As William came nearer to Johnny he asked, “Oi J., what ya
doin?”
“I’m gonna fly my kite,” replied Johnny.
“Oh, cool,” said William. “Can I have a go after you?”
‘Well, not really. You have to know what you’re doing. You
can’t just stand there and hold the kite you know. You have to know which way
the wind is blowing too,” said Johnny.
“Oh,” answered William. “Okay, but can I watch you?”
“Sure,” said Johnny as he tied off the string that he would
hold on to once the kite was in the air.
Johnny held the main stick between his thumb and pointer
finger, held his face u in the air to see which way the wind was blowing,
turned into the wind and held the kite up.
The wind picked up the kite and Johnny let more string out,
and the kite slowly lifted. It lifted up and up even more. The long tail of the
kite flapped this way and that way, up and down. But all Johnny could see was
the amazing blue and yellow bows.
“Wow,” said William. “That’s amazing!”
“I know,” said Johnny.
